Satendra Kumar

Satendra Kumar teaches in the G. B. Pant Social Science Institute. He received his PhD from Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi. He specialises in the sociology and anthropology of caste, class, development, political cultures, agrarian change, youth and future. His research investigates how marginalized groups understand and engage with democratic politics and the state in contemporary India. He has conducted extensive ethnographic fieldwork on these issues in eastern and western Uttar Pradesh. He is writing biographies of criminal-entrepreneurs as well as finishing a book manuscript on the Other Backward Classes in Uttar Pradesh. Beyond his ethnographic research, Satendra is also interested in combining social theory with history, literature and political-legal philosophy. He taught in Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi and has been a visiting scholar at Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), the Johns Hopkins University, University of California, Berkeley and London School of Economics and Political Science, UK.
